This CMU professor is coming to recruit for their masters program. For those of you interested in the program, you can probably go and listen what CMU has to offer. Personally, I think it’s just a cash cow.

> The Rise of Free and Open Source Software
>
> There has long been free software, dating back to the earliest days of the computer industry, initially developed in universities and research laboratories.
>
> Thousands of high quality software products and components have been developed and released under approved licenses. This constantly growing body of high-quality software has driven the growth and acceptance of free and open source software (FOSS). Many FOSS projects have become the leading products in their field, surpassing similar proprietary software.
>
> The rapid growth of FOSS has also transformed the software industry, and has led to new businesses that offer FOSS applications, for which they provide paid support services. As the quality and support for FOSS has grown, some governments and corporations have developed policies that include (or sometimes favor) the use of FOSS in their systems. At the same time, FOSS has continued to grown, playing a major role in such areas as cloud computing and management of large datasets.
>
> This talk describes the benefits of FOSS software for organizations, the ways it can be most effectively used, and the likely future directions for it.

> Hello, Michael,
>
> I'm now ready to go ahead with my travel plans for visiting SJTU and Fudan University in December. As we discussed in our earlier email messages, I will be departing the US on 10 December to arrive in Shanghai on the 11th, and departing Shanghai to arrive in Hong Kong on the 15th. My hope is that I can visit one university on the 12th and the other on the 15th. If we can do that, then I can do an Information Session and a technical talk at each school. If not, then I could do both recruiting talks on the 12th, and we could see if there is a good time to give a technical talk on the other day. I would leave the weekend free for sightseeing.
>
> I could give any of several possible technical talks, including "The Rise of Free and Open Source (FOSS) Software", "Startups and Requirements", and "Low Ceremony Processes for Short Lifecycle Projects". I can send you abstracts for any that are of interest.
>
> I will need an "official" letter of invitation from your university so that I can get my visa. It should have a University letterhead and a signature (or chop), and should show the dates. If you can save it as a PDF and email the PDF to me, that should work. I have attached a sample of the letter that you could use as a template for the invitation letter.
>
> I will look forward to hearing from you and to meeting you in Shanghai in December.
