Subject: Re: [Adapt] It's the 20's. Let's focus on THEM!
It's hard to believe it: we have just lived through the 10's and are just about to usher in the 20's, a brand new decade! (Well, some people might dispute whether the new decade starts from 2020 or 2021.) But anyway, the truth is, time flies by so quickly.
Like any previous years, at this time, we often like to recap all the ups and downs, well, mostly downs, in the last 365 days. We ask ourselves questions like: Do I really have to take that Technical English exam again? Have I forgotten that bad breakup with my ex? How many papers did I submit and get rejected? Or why can't I get that long over-dued promotion? If you are unhappy and unsatisfied with the yearend sum-ups, you are not alone. Little did we know, one important reason for all this sorrow and unhappiness is that we care too much for self, and pay too much attention to our own feelings and own well-beings. Perhaps we also didn't know, that it is actually much easier to please "them" other people than to make peace with ourselves. A weekend phone call to dad; a quick dusting of a labmate's desk; a dinner pack for a roommate who tries to meet a deadline; a little room made for pedestrains when you park your bike. All these small favors and little gestures can easily
put a big smile on their faces. And when they are happy, ultimately, so are you. After all, they are *my* father, *my* fellow students, *my* labmates, ...
So, ADAPTers, for 2020, let's make it a new year resolution: let's focus on THEM, instead of me, or us. Let's not ask what others can do for me, but what I can do for THEM. Let's try to care about not only *my* interests but also THEIR concerns. I believe, this will make our 2020 a better and more memorable year.
Happy New Year!
PS. Because I forgot to take a group pic at the last seminar, I suggest we meet and take a make-up photo outside of 414 tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon 5pm. This also marks the celebration of the new year! See you there tomorrow.
