报告题目:RDMA in Data Centers: From Cloud Computing to Machine Learning

报告摘要:Data centers are being built around the world to meet the
exponentially increasing demands for cloud computing. The same increasing
demands drive the networking speed increase from 10Gb/s to 100Gb/s or higher
and the e2e latency reduction from milliseconds to microseconds. The
traditional software-based TCP/IP protocol, however, cannot keep up with the
increasing network speed. Consequently, RDMA (Remote Direct Memory Access),
once introduced in HPC, now is experiencing a renaissance in Ethernet-based
data centers, at a much larger scale. In this talk, we will discuss the
safety and performance challenges, including the RDMA transport livelock,
PFC deadlock, PFC pause frame storm, and many others that we have
encountered in making RDMA deployable and manageable at scale, the solutions
that we have devised to address these challenges, the lessons we have
learned, and several future research directions. We will also explore the
new role that RDMA will play in a more heterogeneous system and networking
infrastructure for the new era of machine learning.

嘉宾简介:

Chuanxiong Guo is a Director of the AI Lab of Bytedance. Before that, he was
a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research Redmond. He spent several years
in Microsoft Azure as a Principal Software Engineering Manager. He was a
Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research Asia before he joined Microsoft
Azure. His areas of interest include networked systems at large-scale, data
center networking, cloud computing, systems availability and
troubleshooting. He is among the first to start data center networking
research. He has won several best paper awards for his research in data
center networking. Several of his envisions including DCN virtualization,
DCN monitoring, and ServerSwitch generated both academic and industrial
impacts. Many of the systems that he has designed and implemented, including
RDMA/RoCEv2 and Pingmesh are deployed in Microsoft production data centers,
are running in millions of servers in data centers, and widely adopted by
the cloud computing industry.

报告题目:Measuring Cellular Networks Performance on the Road

报告摘要:There are high hopes that the road traffic will become safer, more
efficient and sustainable, as vehicles become connected and can cooperate in
intelligent transport systems (C-ITS). When the vehicles and the road
infrastructure can collect and share information about their route and the
surrounding environment, it opens up for many new services and applications.
Drivers can for example be forewarned of road hazards ahead, and advanced
driver assistance systems can automate braking to avoid collisions. C-ITS is
also expected to enhance and support autonomous driving.

Such a connected and cooperative transport system places extensive demands
on the data communication systems. The mobile networks need to handle
time-critical applications combined with uploads of large data volumes from
moving vehicles. Many future C-ITS applications may require new
communication systems (5G and beyond), while others can already work with
today's 4G/LTE systems. The C-ITS Platform set up by the European Commission
has now released its final report in 2016, in which it advocates the use of
the existing cellular communications infrastructure in order to foster
uptake of C-ITS services, before the future deployment of short-range
communications in the 5.9 GHz band (IEEE802.11p/ETSI ITS-G5).

Hence, measuring the performance and characteristics of current cellular
networks is needed to better understand what to expect from today’s
cellular networks by C-ITS applications. This talk will present MONROE, an
open European measurement platform that is being deployed. MONROE includes
experimental devices running in trains and buses across Europe, which helps
researchers evaluate new C-ITS protocols and services. The talk will also
introduce the MONROE-FELICIA project, which focuses on measuring the
potential benefits of multi-path uploading in road traffic.

嘉宾简介:

Dr Fehmi Ben Abdesslem is a Senior Research Scientist at the Swedish
Institute of Computer Science (SICS) since 20013. He received his PhD from
the University of Paris 6 (Pierre et Marie Curie) in 2008, before joining
the University of St Andrews and then the University of Cambridge. His
research works focus on mobile networks in general, including measurements
on wireless networks and data analytics on cellular network traffic.
